ECO TIP of the MONTH
Brought to you by IdealBite
Wanna help avoid those painfully high water bills?
The Bite
You'll bruise less if you use less - so skip prerinsing your dishes before you put 'em in the dishwasher...just scrape off any food into your compost bin or trash.
Cleaner than if you'd swabbed 'em with iodine. If you have a dishwasher made in the past decade, it's designed to handle food residue.
Saving water supplies. Most faucets spout out 2 gallons per minute.
Less work than putting a bandage on a boo-boo. Why wash your dishes before you, er, wash your dishes?
Wanna Try?
- Resist the urge. Scrape off the big stuff and let your dishwasher do the dirty work.

The Flame Retardant Dilemma: Keeping Buildings Safe without Toxic Chemicals
Halogenated Flame Retardants are used in hundreds of building products. Many of these flame retardants are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic—some having health effects similar to PCBs and PBBs which were banned in the 1970s. While manufacturers recently phased out two of these chemicals, many others continue to be incorporated into building products including foam insulation, electronics housings, upholstery foam and textiles.
In this presentation, we will present our current understanding of the extent of halogenated flame retardants use in building products and the environmental and health impacts of these chemicals. We will also discuss the history of halogenated flame retardant use in building products and the fire codes and economics driving their use.
Following this presentation, we will lead a “questions and answers” looking for safer ways to meet fire safety needs.

Sustainable Business User Group (SBUG)
Earlier this year eBay and PayPal opened a 197,000 sq. ft. building that was certified LEED Gold for its environment-friendly design and materials. Wes Washburn, Senior Manager of Operations and Facilities at eBay has witnessed a number of cultural and environmental successes as his company has explored such questions as “what is environmentally efficient?” They have brought organization and practical reasoning to an area of work that is still very new to many corporations. It is important to examine currently accepted “green” philosophies to determine what is truly good. Mr. Washburn will share the story of how eBay brought efficiencies in operations while protecting the environment together to benefit everyone involved.

Green Interior Design
sustainable design comes inside
You deserve to have a beautiful home that makes you happy each time you walk in, but you can also make it healthier for you and the environment. It is not hard to find products that are lovely, support clean indoor air, and are ecologically sound. You will learn the environmental concerns with common interior materials, the right questions to ask when buying finishes or furniture, and energy efficient upgrades that anyone can install.
Interior design is really fun, and enhances our lives, but information is essential to making good purchases. You will leave this class understanding the basics of green building and materials selection, and how to apply them to your interiors.
The instructor, Kirsten Flynn, owns the design firm Sustainable Home and specializes in environmentally responsible interiors. She has taught locally, and recently designed the interiors for a totally solar house for the Solar Decathlon.
LOCATION: Palo Alto High, 50 Embarcadero, Palo Alto, CA
