ECO TIP of the MONTH
Brought to you by IdealBite

Got a cold and need facial tissues that flatter your nose?

The Bite
Fawn over our picks for softest eco-tissues. While no recycled paper can compete with Puffs-esque highly processed, virgin forest fiber's softness, there are now better alternatives that hold their own.

The Benefits

  • Softness worth praising. Currently, there's no perfect substitute for virgin tree fibers (recycled fibers are, by nature, shorter, and thus coarser), but you can get a softer eco-tissue.
  • Not sucking up forests. If every U.S. household opted for a box of 100% recycled tissue instead of a box of virgin-fiber tissues, we'd conserve 163,000 trees.
  • Not kissing (g)ass. Most tissue paper's bleached with chlorine, which can combine with chems and gases in nature to form harmful toxins, so look for chlorine-free or oxygen-bleached.

Wanna Try?

  • Green Forest Facial Tissue - 100% recycled and bleached without chlorine; just about as soft as conventional brands and available at Whole Foods ($3/175 tissues).
  • Purely Cotton Facial Tissue - not paper, it's supersoft and made from cotton linters, a by-product of cotton production ($4/96 tissues).

Green Interior Design
Green Interior Design, the nuts and bolts.
You deserve to have a beautiful home that makes you happy each time you walk in, but you can also make it healthier for you and the environment. It is not hard to find products that are lovely, support clean indoor air, and are ecologically sound. You will learn the environmental concerns with common interior materials, the right questions to ask when buying finishes or furniture, and energy efficient upgrades that anyone can install.
Interior design is really fun, and enhances our lives, but information is essential to making good purchases. You will leave this class understanding the basics of green building and materials selection, and how to apply them to your interiors.

Democracy Now!
Amy and David Goodman
In conversation with Roy Eisenhardt
The longtime host of the award-winning Pacifica Radio's Democracy Now!, Amy Goodman has steadfastly covered grassroots activism, the political process, and government accountability. She has co-authored many books with her brother and fellow journalist, David Goodman. Their collaborations include investigations into the mercenary aspects of war, media culpability, freedom of information, and international human rights, and seek not only to expose endemic corruption, but also to affect change. Their bestselling book, The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them, examines the full political spectrum, from The Washington Post to Bill Clinton, in an effort to bring genuine accountability into public discourse. The Goodmans' latest project is Standing Up to the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times. Standing Up to the Madness celebrates grassroots activists across America and the power of the individual to bring change on a local and national level.

Maya Lin
In conversation with Ryan Wyatt
The Annual Claire Matzger Lilienthal Distinguished Lecturer
Maya Lin is an artist and architect. Lin was a twenty-year-old architecture student at Yale when her design for the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Washington, D.C. was chosen out of more than 1,400 entries. Her design, two intersecting black granite walls meant to evoke a “knife cut in the earth,” has become an iconic image of public art, profoundly affecting visitors. Lin also designed the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama - a granite inverted cone upon which are inscribed the names of forty individuals who struggled and died in the fight for equality. Across the inscribed names flows a smooth film of water, representing a line from Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech: “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.” Freida Mock's 1995 documentary about the artist, “Maya Lin: A Strong, Clear Vision,” won an Academy Award. The film and Lin's autobiographical book, Boundaries, reveal a talented artist whose sculpture illuminates the world around her. The gardens of the new California Academy of Sciences will include two sculptural installations by Maya Lin. The pieces join the Academy's mission to “explore, explain, and protect the natural world” and Lin's lifelong passion for environmental conservation.
