ECO TIP of the MONTH
Brought to you by IdealBite
Wanna "out" the plastic and wire hangers in your armoire?
The Bite
Don't chuck your current ones, but as you break or lose them, orient yourself with eco-friendly hangers made from bamboo, corn, or wheat. It's the greener lifestyle option.
The Benefits
- A gayer (er, as in happier) Earth. Bamboo is a highly renewable plant, and options made from wheat are actually compostable. Petroleum-based plastic, on the other hand, never fully biodegrades.
- Totally durable options. These are just as sturdy as conventional hangers (and nope, they won't degrade in your closet)..
Personally Speaking:
Unless we plan to use them as campfire marshmallow roasters, we take old wire hangers back to our dry cleaners - most will gladly reuse 'em.
Wanna Try?
- B Green - many styles of bamboo hangers, including retro-style ones and hangers just for kids ($55-$85/25 hangers).
- Wheatware - biodegradable wheat-based hangers, with hooks for the slinkier items in your wardrobe - don't worry, they won't degrade with normal use ($5/5).
- Merrick Earthsaver - you can't get these bamboo and corn-based hangers on its website, but certain big-box stores, such as Target and Wal-Mart, carry them ($7/6 bamboo hangers; $4/5 corn-based hangers).
- GreenHeart Global Ditto Hangers and EcoHangers - tell your dry cleaners about these bulk recycled paper and plastic hangers for businesses.

PG&E's Green Home Energy Upgrades: Introduction
Together with its site and occupants, every existing home is unique, and most have comfort, indoor air quality and energy problems that are difficult to solve (and easy to make worse!) unless you use a comprehensive scientific approach. Home performance contracting is an emerging green collar industry that benefits homeowners by solving their comfort and indoor air quality problems and benefits contractors by expanding their ability to solve problems, satisfy customers, and improve environments.
Home performance is supported at the national level by EPA's Home Performance with Energy Star and at the state level by the California Building Performance Contractors Association (CBPCA). PG&E will soon offer incentives for home energy upgrades by home performance contractors. From building science to business opportunities and site evaluation to diagnostic testing, this class is intended tohelp interested quality oriented contractors decide whether to undertake more comprehensive training, but it is also suitable for other residential building professionals, from architects to realtors, who want to learn more about this new field. This program is funded by California utility customers and administered by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission.

East Bay Green Building Professionals Guild
Topic: The Team Approach: Improving the Design & Construction Process to Achieve “Truly Green” Projects
What practical methods can you apply to your projects to incorporate effective communication & coordination (a team approach) throughout the design and construction process? The typical “linear” approach used for residential projects has many drawbacks and can result in added COSTs, change orders, reduced client satisfaction, and inefficient use of energy and resources. In this presentation, you will learn about the benefits of an integrated approach and challenges with implementing it. A panel of architects and general contractors will share their real-life experiences and lessons learned and offer an open forum for discussion and brainstorming.

Since 1991, Pesticide Watch Education Fund (PWEF) has worked side-by-side with communities to clean up and prevent pesticide pollution and pesticide exposure. We believe everyone has a right to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live in a healthy and safe community.
Over the past two years we have worked hard to grow our organization more than ever, reopening our San Francisco office, and working to reduce and ultimately eliminate the use of toxic pesticides, while providing safer alternatives and increasing food security. On April 2nd, we will be celebrating our efforts over the past two years, with local music, food and speakers, and fundraising money to continue into the next.

The longtime host of the award-winning Pacifica Radio's Democracy Now!, Amy Goodman has steadfastly covered grassroots activism, the political process, and government accountability. She has co-authored many books with her brother and fellow journalist, David Goodman. Their collaborations include investigations into the mercenary aspects of war, media culpability, freedom of information, and international human rights, and seek not only to expose endemic corruption, but also to affect change. Their bestselling book, The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them, examines the full political spectrum, from The Washington Post to Bill Clinton, in an effort to bring genuine accountability into public discourse. The Goodmans' latest project is Standing Up to the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times. Maya Lin
In conversation with Ryan Wyatt
The Annual Claire Matzger Lilienthal Distinguished Lecturer
Maya Lin is an artist and architect. Lin was a twenty-year-old architecture student at Yale when her design for the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Washington, D.C. was chosen out of more than 1,400 entries. Her design, two intersecting black granite walls meant to evoke a “knife cut in the earth,” has become an iconic image of public art, profoundly affecting visitors. Lin also designed the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama - a granite inverted cone upon which are inscribed the names of forty individuals who struggled and died in the fight for equality. Across the inscribed names flows a smooth film of water, representing a line from Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech: “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.” Freida Mock's 1995 documentary about the artist, “Maya Lin: A Strong, Clear Vision,” won an Academy Award. The film and Lin's

Scaling Up: From Green Buildings
to Green Cities in the US and China
Presented by Bay Area Council and Asia Society
Buildings consume well over 30 percent of all primary energy in the world, more than either transportation or industry. By building green, we can reduce energy consumption in this key sector by 30-50 percent and cut greenhouse gas emissions by similar margins. It is also one of the cheapest ways to do so: green building adds only 1-5 percent to construction costs, which are recovered through reduced energy demand in a few years or less.
The green building revolution has begun, but it has far to go. In the US, the floor space of LEED-certified buildings totals 12.5 million square meters, with much more in the pipeline. California leads the way, with far more green buildings than any other state. In China, green buildings have gone from zero in 2000 to 4 million square meters today, again with much more in the offing.
Today, the greatest challenge for green design is to scale up -- to move beyond pilot projects and piecemeal solutions to building and retrofitting on a massive scale in order to have a meaningful impact on global warming. Green materials must be mass produced, construction techniques must be standardized, and the principles of green design must inform urban planning, not simply the design of individual buildings. These are the critical issues this conference will address.
This one-day conference is the first to bring together leading green design specialists from the fields of research, technology, architecture, business, and policy from the U.S. and China to build dialogue and collaboration. The US and China are rapidly becoming the global centers for green design promotion, development, and investment, and many other Asian countries are beginning to follow suit.
SPEAKERS:
John Bilmon, Managing Director of PTW Architects and chief designer of the Beijing Olympics Water Cube, is keynote speaker.
Other featured speakers include:
• Jeff Heller, President of San Francisco's Heller Manus Architects, now in charge of planning the new, green $100 million downtown center in Guangzhou, China.
• John Kriken, Consulting Partner at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP, whose Saigon South project in Ho Chi Minh city won an Urban Design Award from Progressive Architecture and a National Honor Award from the AIA, and whose Shanghai and Hong Kong Waterfront plans won AIA National Honor Awards.
• Mark Levine, Group Leader of the China Energy Group at Berkeley Lab, the leading American expert on energy efficiency issues in China.
• Jiang Yi, Professor of Building Science at Tsinghua University, the leading authority on green building policy in China.
• Dan Winey, Managing Principal, Northwest Region, Gensler, who is overseeing the design of 22 million square feet in construction in China, including the cutting-edge Shanghai Tower.

Jim Hansen
In conversation with Mark Hertsgaard
Jim Hansen has been at the center of the climate change debate since the early 1980s as both a prominent scientist and spokesman alerting the public to the threats and uncertainties of global climate change. The head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Hansen studies radiative transfer in planetary atmospheres related to global change on Earth. He is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University. Hansen's numerous awards include the Heinz Environment Award and the Dan David Prize. His public policy experience has been punctuated by Congressional hearings as well as his advocacy to reduce fossil fuel dependency. He has been instrumental in alerting the public to how science has been politicized in its translation to government policy. In 2005, Hansen stated that NASA administrators restricted his ability to communicate directly with the public and censored his findings about the threats of globa
l climate change. In a subsequent report, NASA's inspector general acknowledged the agency had marginalized and mischaracterized climate change science. Hansen has written several books and numerous scientific papers on climate change and maintains that by dealing directly with the causes, we will benefit from cleaner air and water as well as growth of high-tech industries.
