By building green, we can reduce energy consumption in this key sector by 30-50 percent and cut greenhouse gas emissions by similar margins. It is also one of the cheapest ways to do so: green building adds only 1-5 percent to construction costs, which are recovered through reduced energy demand in a few years or less. The green building revolution has begun, but it has far to go. In the US, the floor space of LEED-certified buildings totals 12.5 million square meters, with much more in the pipeline. California leads the way, with far more green buildings than any other state. In China, green buildings have gone from zero in 2000 to 4 million square meters today, again with much more in the offing. Today, the greatest challenge for green design is to scale up -- to move beyond pilot projects and piecemeal solutions to building and retrofitting on a massive scale in order to have a meaningful impact on global warming. Green materials must be mass produced, construction techniques must be standardized, and the principles of green design must inform urban planning, not simply the design of individual buildings. These are the critical issues this conference will address. This one-day conference is the first to bring together leading green design specialists from the fields of research, technology, architecture, business, and policy from the U.S. and China to build dialogue and collaboration. The head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Hansen studies radiative transfer in planetary atmospheres related to global change on Earth. He is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University. Hansen's numerous awards include the Heinz Environment Award and the Dan David Prize. His public policy experience has been punctuated by Congressional hearings as well as his advocacy to reduce fossil fuel dependency. He has been instrumental in alerting the public to how science has been politicized in its translation to government policy. In 2005, Hansen stated that NASA administrators restricted his ability to communicate directly with the public and censored his findings about the threats of globa l climate change. In a subsequent report, NASA's inspector general acknowledged the agency had marginalized and mischaracterized climate change science. Hansen has written several books and numerous scientific papers on climate change and maintains that by dealing directly with the causes, we will benefit from cleaner air and water as well as growth of high-tech industries. Lin was a twenty-year-old architecture student at Yale when her design for the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Washington, D.C. was chosen out of more than 1,400 entries. Her design, two intersecting black granite walls meant to evoke a “knife cut in the earth,” has become an iconic image of public art, profoundly affecting visitors. Lin also designed the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama - a granite inverted cone upon which are inscribed the names of forty individuals who struggled and died in the fight for equality. Across the inscribed names flows a smooth film of water, representing a line from Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech: “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.” Freida Mock's 1995 documentary about the artist, “Maya Lin: A Strong, Clear Vision,” won an Academy Award. The film and Lin's autobiographical book, Boundaries, reveal a talented artist whose sculpture illuminates the world around her. By building green, we can reduce energy consumption in this key sector by 30-50 percent and cut greenhouse gas emissions by similar margins. It is also one of the cheapest ways to do so: green building adds only 1-5 percent to construction costs, which are recovered through reduced energy demand in a few years or less. The green building revolution has begun, but it has far to go. In the US, the floor space of LEED-certified buildings totals 12.5 million square meters, with much more in the pipeline. California leads the way, with far more green buildings than any other state. In China, green buildings have gone from zero in 2000 to 4 million square meters today, again with much more in the offing. Today, the greatest challenge for green design is to scale up -- to move beyond pilot projects and piecemeal solutions to building and retrofitting on a massive scale in order to have a meaningful impact on global warming. Green materials must be mass produced, construction techniques must be standardized, and the principles of green design must inform urban planning, not simply the design of individual buildings. These are the critical issues this conference will address. This one-day conference is the first to bring together leading green design specialists from the fields of research, technology, architecture, business, and policy from the U.S. and China to build dialogue and collaboration. The US and China are rapidly becoming the global centers for green design promotion, development, and investment, and many other Asian countries are beginning to follow suit. The head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Hansen studies radiative transfer in planetary atmospheres related to global change on Earth. He is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University. Hansen's numerous awards include the Heinz Environment Award and the Dan David Prize. His public policy experience has been punctuated by Congressional hearings as well as his advocacy to reduce fossil fuel dependency. He has been instrumental in alerting the public to how science has been politicized in its translation to government policy. In 2005, Hansen stated that NASA administrators restricted his ability to communicate directly with the public and censored his findings about the threats of globa l climate change. In a subsequent report, NASA's inspector general acknowledged the agency had marginalized and mischaracterized climate change science. Hansen has written several books and numerous scientific papers on climate change and maintains that by dealing directly with the causes, we will benefit from cleaner air and water as well as growth of high-tech industries.
